Does Google Drive Have End-to-End Encryption?
By ToolVS Research Team · Last checked April 1, 2026
⚠️
PARTIAL
Google Drive encrypts files in transit and at rest, but does not offer true end-to-end encryption. Google can technically access your files.
What We Found
We checked this in April 2026 and here's what we found — Google Drive uses TLS for data in transit and AES-256 for data at rest on their servers. However, this is not end-to-end encryption — Google holds the encryption keys and can technically decrypt your files. For businesses, Google Workspace offers client-side encryption (CSE) where you control the keys, but this requires Enterprise Plus plan.
Limitations
- ⚠️ Google holds encryption keys for standard accounts
- ⚠️ Client-side encryption only on Enterprise Plus
- ⚠️ Not zero-knowledge encryption
- ⚠️ Government requests can compel access
