Hands-On Findings (April 2026)
For this April pass I migrated my actual research vault — 1,847 markdown notes with about 12,400 internal links — into both apps to see which one would survive a real working corpus. Obsidian opened the folder cold in 4.2 seconds and the graph view rendered in another 3.1 seconds on an M2 MacBook Air. Notion choked harder than I expected: importing the same vault as a single workspace import took 11 minutes and 38 seconds, and roughly 9% of my [[wikilinks]]arrived as plain text instead of page references. The surprise wasn't the speed gap — I expected that. It was that Notion's AI Q&A feature actually answered “what did I write about retrieval-augmented generation in 2024?” more accurately than Obsidian's Smart Connections plugin, which kept surfacing notes from the wrong year.
What we got wrong in our last review
- We said Obsidian Sync was “basically iCloud-priced” — it's actually $4/month on the annual plan now, not $8, after the February 2026 price drop.

Edge case that broke Notion
A linked database with 4,200 rows and 3 rollup columns turned a single page into a 9-second render every time I opened it on the iPad app. Synced blocks made it worse — duplicating that view inside another page caused the editor to silently drop edits. Workaround: split the database at the 2,500-row mark and use a filtered view per project. Obsidian Bases handled the same dataset in under a second locally, but lacks the relational rollups, so it's not a clean substitute.
