What is Zoom?

Zoom is the most widely used video conferencing platform with 300M+ daily meeting participants. Beyond video calls, it now offers Zoom Workplace with chat, whiteboard, phone, and AI Companion features. The platform became a household name during the pandemic and remains the default for business meetings, webinars, and virtual events.

Pros

  • Breakout rooms, polls, and webinar features
  • Works everywhere: desktop, mobile, browser, phone dial-in
  • Zoom AI Companion for meeting summaries and action items
  • Massive adoption means everyone knows how to use it

Cons

  • Free plan has 40-minute limit on group meetings
  • Zoom fatigue is real — video meetings are exhausting
  • Privacy concerns linger from early pandemic issues
  • Webinar and Events require expensive add-on licenses
  • Teams and Meet are free with enterprise suites, undercutting Zoom

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Zoom free plan still good in 2026?
Zoom free plan allows unlimited 1:1 meetings and 40-minute group meetings with up to 100 participants. Pro plan ($13.33/mo) removes the time limit and adds cloud recording.
Zoom vs Google Meet: which is better?
Zoom has better features and video quality. Google Meet is better for Google Workspace users and offers unlimited free group calls. Zoom free has a 40-minute limit on group calls.
Is Zoom safe to use?
Yes. Zoom invested heavily in security since 2020 with end-to-end encryption, waiting rooms, passcodes, and SOC 2 Type II compliance.

Editor's Take

Zoom went from a verb to a commodity. In 2020, there was no alternative. In 2026, Teams and Meet are both excellent and often free with your existing enterprise license. So why does Zoom still matter? Two things: reliability and simplicity. Zoom calls just work. The audio quality is noticeably better than competitors, breakout rooms are seamless, and the AI Companion actually generates useful meeting summaries. If your company already pays for Microsoft 365, Teams is fine and free. If you need the best meeting experience and do not mind paying $13/user, Zoom is still the gold standard.
