How Readability Scores Work

Flesch Reading Ease
206.835 - 1.015(words/sentences) - 84.6(syllables/words)
Scores 0-100. Higher is easier. 60-70 is plain English.
Flesch-Kincaid Grade
0.39(words/sentences) + 11.8(syllables/words) - 15.59
Returns a U.S. school grade level. Grade 8 means an 8th grader can understand it.
Gunning Fog Index
0.4[(words/sentences) + 100(complex words/total words)]
Estimates years of education needed. 12+ means college level.
Coleman-Liau Index
0.0588 * L - 0.296 * S - 15.8
L = letters per 100 words, S = sentences per 100 words. Returns grade level.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is based on the average adult silent reading speed of 238 words per minute (Brysbaert, 2019). Speaking time uses 130 wpm, typical for presentations. Hand writing time uses 13 wpm, the average for longhand writing.

How accurate are the syllable counts?

Our syllable counter uses the vowel-group heuristic: count consecutive vowel groups (a, e, i, o, u, y) as one syllable each, subtract one for a silent trailing "e", and enforce a minimum of one syllable per word. This method is accurate for roughly 90% of English words.

What readability score should I aim for?

For general web content, aim for a Flesch Reading Ease of 60-70 and a grade level of 7-8. Blog posts and marketing copy perform best at grade 6-8. Academic and technical writing naturally scores higher grade levels, which is acceptable for those audiences.

What is a good keyword density?

There is no magic number. In general, your primary keyword should appear naturally at 1-3% density. Anything above 3-4% may be considered keyword stuffing by search engines. Focus on writing naturally and covering your topic thoroughly rather than hitting an exact percentage.
