By ToolVS Research Team · Last Updated April 2026
What is Figma?
Figma is the industry-standard collaborative design tool for UI/UX, product design, and prototyping. Browser-based and platform-agnostic, it enables real-time collaboration similar to Google Docs but for design. With FigJam for whiteboarding, Dev Mode for developer handoff, and a plugin ecosystem of 3,000+ plugins, Figma has become the default tool for design teams worldwide.
Pros
- Real-time collaboration — multiple designers work on the same file
- Browser-based — works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook
- Industry-leading component and design system features
- FigJam for brainstorming and whiteboarding
- Massive plugin and community ecosystem
Cons
- Requires internet connection — limited offline support
- Organization plan ($75/editor/mo) is expensive for agencies
- Performance can lag with very complex files (100+ frames)
- Not ideal for print design or illustration work
- Dev Mode pricing adds cost for developer seats

Editor's Take
Figma killed Sketch, outlasted Adobe XD, and became the Photoshop of our generation. That is not hype — it is simply what happened. The real-time collaboration alone was enough to win, but the component system, auto layout, and plugin ecosystem sealed the deal. My only concern is pricing creep — the Organization plan at $75/editor/month is steep, and Dev Mode adds more cost. For solo designers and small teams, the Professional plan at $15/editor is fair. If you are a designer in 2026 and not using Figma, you are in the minority.
