Migration takes 4-8 hours for a typical small business website. Wix does not have a full site export feature, making this harder than it should be. Blog posts transfer via RSS feed, but pages and design must be rebuilt manually in Squarespace. The good news: Squarespace templates are beautiful out of the box, so your new site may look better with less effort.

Migration Checklist

Step 1: Export Content from Wix

  1. Export blog posts: go to your Wix blog RSS feed at yourdomain.com/blog-feed.xml
  2. Save the RSS XML file to your computer
  3. Download all images: right-click and save, or use a download tool like HTTrack
  4. Copy all page text content into a document (Wix has no full page export)
  5. Take screenshots of every page for design reference
  6. List all your pages and their URLs

Note: Wix is one of the most restrictive platforms for data export. There is no one-click export. This is by design.

Step 2: Prepare Content for Import

  1. Organize all images into folders by page
  2. Review and clean blog post content from the RSS export
  3. Plan your new URL structure for Squarespace
  4. Create a redirect mapping: old Wix URL → new Squarespace URL
  5. Prepare product data if you have an e-commerce store (CSV format)

Step 3: Set Up Squarespace Site

  1. Create your account at squarespace.com (14-day free trial)
  2. Choose a template that matches your brand style
  3. Configure site title, logo, and favicon: Design → Logo & Title
  4. Set up navigation structure: Pages → Navigation
  5. Configure your color palette and fonts: Design → Site Styles

Step 4: Import Blog Posts

  1. Go to Settings → Import & Export Content → Import
  2. Select RSS Feed as the import source
  3. Upload your Wix blog RSS XML file
  4. Squarespace imports blog post titles, text, and publication dates
  5. Manually add featured images to each imported post
  6. Review and fix formatting on each post

Important: Images from Wix blog posts may not import. You will need to re-upload images manually to each post.

Step 5: Rebuild Static Pages

  1. Create each page: Pages → + (Add Page)
  2. Use Squarespace blocks to recreate your layout: text, image, gallery, form
  3. Upload images and arrange them using Squarespace's section editor
  4. Add contact forms: use built-in Squarespace Form Blocks
  5. Set up any booking or scheduling features

Step 6: Set Up E-commerce (If Applicable)

  1. Enable Squarespace Commerce: upgrade to Business or Commerce plan
  2. Add products manually or import via CSV: Commerce → Inventory → Import
  3. Connect payment processor: Stripe and/or PayPal
  4. Configure shipping options, tax settings, and checkout
  5. Set up email notifications for orders

Step 7: Configure SEO and Redirects

  1. Set up URL redirects: Settings → Advanced → URL Mappings
  2. Add a redirect for every old Wix URL to its new Squarespace URL
  3. Format: /old-wix-page -> /new-squarespace-page 301
  4. Set page titles and meta descriptions: edit each page → SEO tab
  5. Connect Google Search Console and submit your sitemap
  6. Connect Google Analytics: Settings → Advanced → External API Keys

Step 8: Transfer Your Domain

  1. Option A (recommended): Point your domain to Squarespace by updating DNS records
  2. In Squarespace: Settings → Domains → Use a domain I own
  3. Update your domain registrar: add CNAME pointing to ext-cust.squarespace.com
  4. Option B: Transfer domain registration to Squarespace: Settings → Domains → Transfer
  5. Wait 24-48 hours for DNS propagation
  6. Verify SSL is active on your custom domain

Step 9: Deactivate Wix

  1. Keep Wix active for 1-2 weeks after DNS switch as fallback
  2. Take a final full backup (screenshots + content copy)
  3. Go to Account Settings → Premium Plans → Cancel Plan
  4. If you registered your domain through Wix, make sure to transfer it or update DNS before canceling
