How We Rate Website Builders
Our scoring methodology is 100% transparent. No vendor payments influence our ratings.

Why This Matters
Your website is often the first impression customers have of your business. A slow, poorly designed site kills conversions before visitors even read your content. We weight design flexibility, performance, and SEO as the top three criteria because a website that looks great, loads fast, and ranks well covers the core requirements of any online presence.
Scoring Weights for Website Builders
Every website builder is scored across six criteria that determine whether your site will look professional, perform well, and attract organic traffic.

How We Test Website Builders
We build the same reference website on every platform: a professional services site with 8 pages, a blog, a contact form, an image gallery, and responsive design across all breakpoints. This standardized approach makes performance comparisons meaningful.
Performance testing is objective. We run Google PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse, and WebPageTest on every completed site. We measure Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift, and Time to Interactive. These Core Web Vitals directly affect Google rankings and user experience.
SEO testing goes beyond checking for a meta tag field. We verify clean URL structures, proper heading hierarchy, image alt text handling, sitemap generation, robots.txt control, canonical tag management, and structured data support. We also check whether the builder produces bloated HTML that hurts crawl efficiency.
Design flexibility is tested at both extremes: how quickly can a non-designer build a decent site from a template, and how much control does a designer have when building something custom? We check whether templates are truly customizable or just rigid containers. We test CSS override ability, animation support, and responsive breakpoint control.
What We Don't Do
- ✗We don't accept payment from website builder vendors to influence scores or rankings
- ✗We don't use affiliate commission rates to decide which platform wins a comparison
- ✗We don't aggregate scores from other review sites — every score is our own original assessment
- ✗We don't judge performance based on demo sites — we build and test real published websites
- ✗We don't ignore vendor lock-in — we test data export and migration difficulty for every platform
