How We Rate Email Marketing Software

Our scoring methodology is 100% transparent. No vendor payments influence our ratings.

By ToolVS Research Team · Last reviewed April 2026

Why This Matters

Email marketing delivers the highest ROI of any digital channel — $36 for every $1 spent on average. But that only works if your emails actually reach the inbox. We weight automation and deliverability highest because they directly determine whether your campaigns generate revenue or land in spam folders.

Scoring Weights for Email Marketing Platforms

Every email platform is scored across six criteria weighted by their impact on real campaign performance and marketing ROI.

How We Test Email Marketing Platforms

We set up a real email list of 2,000+ opted-in subscribers for every platform we test. This is not a synthetic benchmark — we send actual campaigns and measure actual deliverability. Our test list is segmented across Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and corporate email providers.

Automation testing follows a standard scenario: a 5-email welcome sequence with conditional branching based on link clicks and opens. We test how intuitive the visual builder is, how many trigger types are available, and whether A/B testing is available inside workflows — not just on standalone campaigns.

Template quality is evaluated on both design and deliverability. A beautiful template that renders broken on Outlook is not a good template. We test every editor-built email across 12 email clients using Litmus. We also check whether templates are truly customizable or just rigid layouts with swappable images.

Pricing analysis accounts for list growth. We calculate costs at 1,000, 10,000, and 100,000 subscribers because many platforms become dramatically more expensive at scale. We flag platforms that charge per email sent vs per subscriber and identify hidden costs like landing page add-ons or premium support.

What We Don't Do

  • We don't accept payment from email marketing vendors to influence scores or rankings
  • We don't use affiliate commission rates to decide which platform wins a comparison
  • We don't aggregate scores from other review sites — every score is our own original assessment
  • We don't rely on vendor-provided deliverability stats — we measure inbox placement ourselves
  • We don't test with demo accounts — we use the same plans available to real customers
