How We Rate Team Communication Tools
Our scoring methodology is 100% transparent. No vendor payments influence our ratings.

Why This Matters
Communication tools are where work actually happens for distributed teams. The average knowledge worker spends 28% of their workday in chat and meetings. We weight messaging, video quality, and async communication nearly equally because modern teams need all three modes to function well — especially across time zones.
Scoring Weights for Communication Tools
Every communication platform is scored across six criteria designed to reflect how remote and hybrid teams actually work day-to-day.

How We Test Communication Tools
We run a 15-person distributed team scenario on every platform for at least two weeks. This includes engineers in different time zones, a product manager coordinating sprints, a design team sharing visual work, and external contractors needing guest access. This mirrors real organizational communication patterns.
Video call quality is tested across network conditions. We measure audio clarity, video resolution, and screen sharing performance on both strong and degraded connections (simulated 10 Mbps and 2 Mbps). We also test call reliability — how often calls drop, how quickly reconnection happens, and how gracefully the tool handles participants with poor connectivity.
Async communication is increasingly important for distributed teams. We evaluate video messaging features, voice note quality, the ability to send scheduled messages, and how well the platform supports people working across 8+ hour time zone differences without requiring anyone to be online simultaneously.
Search quality directly affects team productivity. We test whether you can find a message from 3 months ago about a specific project decision, locate a file shared in a thread, and filter results effectively. Poor search turns communication history into a black hole.
What We Don't Do
- ✗We don't accept payment from communication tool vendors to influence scores or rankings
- ✗We don't use affiliate commission rates to decide which platform wins a comparison
- ✗We don't aggregate scores from other review sites — every score is our own original assessment
- ✗We don't test on ideal network conditions only — we simulate real-world connectivity issues
- ✗We don't evaluate tools in isolation — we test them as part of a complete team workflow
