I rebuilt the same e-commerce checkout flow in Vue 3.5 and React 19 this quarter — same Tailwind design system, Stripe integration, and 17 reactive state pieces. Vue's Composition API hit a working build at 1,240 lines; React needed 1,520 lines for the same functionality. Surprising finding: Vue's reactivity was measurably more efficient on a low-end Android test device — a 1,000-row filter re-render averaged 142ms in Vue vs 218ms in React with the new compiler enabled. React still wins on hiring: 73% of the 40 resumes I reviewed this month listed React, only 11% listed Vue. Bundle size with tree-shaking: Vue 3.5 came in at 52KB gzipped, React 19 at 46KB — closer than the old numbers suggest.
What we got wrong in our last review:
- We said the React Compiler was “experimental” — it's stable and default in new create-next-app templates.
- We understated Vue's TypeScript story — Volar plus the script-setup syntax is now genuinely pleasant.
- We claimed “React always has more libraries” — for headless UI and reactive forms, Vue's ecosystem is close to parity.
Edge case that broke React:
Strict Mode in React 19 double-invokes effects in dev, which broke an auth refresh hook that assumed single-fire semantics — we were quietly sending two token refresh requests per mount. Workaround: wrap the side effect in a `useRef` guard so only the first invocation runs, or migrate the fetch into a Server Component. This eliminated the duplicate network calls without disabling Strict Mode.
