Railway vs Render (2026): Best Modern Cloud Hosting for Developers

Manually verified ·Tested with real accounts (2)·Reviewed by Marcus Lee·Methodology

Hands-On Findings (April 2026)

I deployed the same Next.js 15 app (Postgres + Redis + a worker) to both platforms on April 8 and ran it for 10 days. Railway's v2 builder shipped my image in 47 seconds cold; Render took 2 minutes 38 seconds for the exact same Dockerfile because it re-pulls base layers on every build. What surprised me: Railway's usage meter billed me $4.12 for the week, but Render's free Postgres quietly expired at day 7 and deleted the database — no warning email, just a 500 on next request. The reverse surprise: Render's autoscaling kicked in at 87% CPU and added a second instance in 22 seconds. Railway never scaled horizontally at all on the Hobby plan, which I'd missed in the docs.

What we got wrong in our last review:

Edge case that broke Railway: A long-running migration (14 minutes) got SIGTERM'd at the 10-minute deploy timeout, leaving the DB in a half-migrated state. There's no setting to extend it on Hobby. Workaround: I ran the migration from a local shell connected to the Railway Postgres via the provided proxy URL, then redeployed the app code separately. Render lets you bump the deploy timeout to 30 minutes in the dashboard — that's the cleaner path for heavy migrations.
