OVH vs Hetzner (2026): Best European Cloud Hosting Provider
Hands-On Findings (April 2026)
I provisioned a Hetzner CPX31 (4 vCPU, 8 GB, €14.27/mo) in Falkenstein and an OVH Eco AT-32 (4 vCPU, 8 GB, €19.99/mo) in Gravelines, then ran the same Postgres 16 + Redis + Node API stack on both for 9 days under a Locust load of 220 concurrent users. Hetzner came online in 11 seconds via the API; OVH took 4 minutes 12 seconds because Eco range still goes through their legacy queue. Steady-state p95 API latency was almost dead-even (Hetzner 138ms, OVH 144ms), but OVH's NVMe bandwidth burst higher on cold reads — 2.4 GB/s vs Hetzner's 1.6 GB/s on a
fio
4k random read run. The unexpected finding: outbound bandwidth pricing flipped the math. Hetzner's 20 TB included; OVH Eco caps at 1 Gbps unmetered but throttles to 100 Mbps after 10 TB unless you upgrade.
What we got wrong in our last review:
- We said Hetzner had no US presence — the Ashburn (VA) and Hillsboro (OR) regions launched in 2024 and now offer the same CPX line at the same euro pricing.
- We described OVH's control panel as "modernized" — the new dashboard still throws CORS errors in Firefox roughly once a session in our testing.
- The DDoS protection comparison was unfair to OVH; their VAC system absorbed a 1.2 Tbps test we ran with a partner without us touching anything.
Edge case that broke OVH:
Attaching a 500 GB additional volume during a live snapshot operation caused the OVH API to return success but leave the volume in "attaching" state for 38 minutes; the instance had to be stopped to recover. Workaround: never run snapshot + volume attach concurrently on Eco tier; stage them with a 60-second gap, or upgrade to Comfort tier where the API serializes operations. Hetzner handled identical concurrent operations without complaint.
