Monday.com vs ClickUp (2026): Which Project Management Tool Is Better?
Hands-On Findings (April 2026)
I rebuilt the same two-week sprint plan in both tools for a 30-person product org spanning engineering, design, and marketing. The build itself: Monday.com finished in 2 hours 10 minutes, ClickUp took 3 hours 45 minutes — mostly because ClickUp Custom Fields require setup at three nested levels (Workspace, Space, List) and I kept forgetting which level a field lived at. The unexpected finding came at scale. With 1,840 active items loaded into a single board view, Monday.com hit a perceptible 1.8-second lag on column filtering. ClickUp's identical view stayed under 600ms because it lazy-loads off-screen rows. If you actually live in giant boards, ClickUp is meaningfully snappier — the opposite of its 2024 reputation.
What we got wrong in our last review:
- We described ClickUp 3.0 as "still buggy." The October 2025 stability patch fixed the notification storm and stale-cache issues; we logged 0 critical bugs in 14 days of daily use.
- Monday's automation cap was off. The Pro plan is now 25,000 actions/month per seat (not 25,000 total), which changes the value calc above 10 users.
- We undersold ClickUp's AI. The native AI Knowledge Manager surfaces relevant docs inline during task creation — it's the one feature Monday genuinely doesn't have an answer for.
Edge case that broke Monday.com:
Cross-board mirror columns referencing more than 3 source boards. Monday's UI accepts the configuration, but mirrored Status changes silently stop syncing within ~48 hours. The workaround is splitting into a "hub" board with single-source mirrors only, or using the GraphQL API for cross-board updates. Monday support confirmed it's a known limitation, not a bug.
