Hands-On Findings (April 2026)
For this round I uploaded the same 187-page diligence packet — a messy mix of scanned PDFs, an Excel cap table, and an investor memo — to both assistants and asked the same four questions. Claude 3.7 Sonnet answered all four correctly with citations to specific page numbers in 1 minute 51 seconds total. ChatGPT (GPT-4.5 with Deep Research toggled off) took 3 minutes 02 seconds and got one number wrong on the cap table — it confused fully-diluted with as-converted shares, a mistake a junior associate would also make. The real surprise was the opposite direction: when I asked both to draft a follow-up email in the founder's voice using six prior emails as a style sample, ChatGPT's output was noticeably warmer and closer to the source. Claude wrote a more accurate email; ChatGPT wrote one I'd actually send.
What we got wrong in our last review
- We said Claude's 200K context was “the only one that mattered.” ChatGPT now ships a 256K window on Pro and Team plans as of February 2026 — the gap closed and then flipped.
- We described Claude as “text only.” Vision input has been GA since November 2025; it handled our hand-drawn whiteboard photos as well as ChatGPT did.
- We over-recommended ChatGPT's code interpreter for data work. For pandas-heavy notebooks under 50 MB, sure — but for anything reproducible, both still lose to a real Jupyter session.
Edge case that broke Claude
When I uploaded a single 412 MB CSV of e-commerce orders, Claude refused mid-analysis with a vague “file too large” error after appearing to accept the upload — a 90-second wasted round trip. Workaround: pre-aggregate to a parquet file under 30 MB, or split into monthly CSVs and ask Claude to merge programmatically. ChatGPT's code interpreter swallowed the same file in one go but then ran out of memory on the second pivot, so neither tool is the right answer for that scale of data.
